God wants his people out of debt. He even instituted the Year of Jubilee, a year when all property sold because of poverty would be returned to the original owners (Lev 25:13) and slavery was cancelled (Lev 25:54). Every seven years the all monetary debts are to be cancelled (Deu 15:1). God hates his people living under debt.

God’s shaking of Egypt to free the Israelites from slavery is a prophetic preview of the end-time shaking that we are now witnessing and experiencing (1 Cor 10:11). The objective of this shaking is to bring God's people from bondage to freedom. Whatever is not of God will be shaken off (Heb 12: 27-28). One of the bondages of Satan that God wants to shake off his people now is debt, which has been used to hold many people in slavery (Pro 22:7).

Money is spiritual. Mammon was an actual spiritual entity worshipped in New Testament times. All the ten plagues showed that the bondage of Pharaoh over the Israelites was fundamentally a fight over money. After the plague of darkness Pharaoh revealed that ultimately he was interested in the wealth of the Israelites (Exo 10:24). And God also took efforts to preserve the assets of his people (Exo 9:26) and gave the Egyptians the opportunity to protect their assets as well, should they heed the word of the Lord (Exo 9:20). The assets of the Israelites multiplied in value as the assets of the Egyptians were destroyed. This is symbolic of the end-times transfer of wealth (Pro 13:22).

Debt is so much a part of the economic system of the world that people cannot imagine living without debt. The Bible warns us against being rich in loans (Hab 2:6, NASB) and thinking we are rich when we are not (Rev 3:17). God gives us the means to escape debt and inherit the earth – meekness (Mat 5:5). Meekness refers to strength held in restraint, living within boundaries, like Moses (Num 12:3, KJV) and Jesus (Mat 11:28-29, KJV). Jesus had the authority to call upon 12 legions of angels to deliver him from the cross (Mat 26:53) but chose not to. This showed his meekness and caused him to inherit the earth.

To get out of debt we need to take responsibility for our actions and stop blaming the economy, other people or God (Pro 19:3). We need to stop borrowing more loans to pay off other loans, because that is repeating the same mistake (Pro 26:11). For people who lack restraint in their spending, that can mean cutting up their credit cards. We also need to restrain our spending on unnecessary luxuries such as costly hobbies and cable TV (Pro 21:17). Buy a car only if it helps generate revenue (Pro 14:4) otherwise it is a terrible investment that depreciates almost immediately upon purchase. Negotiate with creditors and work with them to systematically pay off the debt (Mat 5:25-26). Whenever possible do not depend on bankruptcy to write off debt problems, because God wants us to honour our debts (Psa 37:21). It is wise for us to pay off the debts with the highest interest first.

Look for what you can sell, sell them and use the money to pay off debts (2 Kin 4:7). Avoid unnecessary possessions and clutter, because life is not measured by how much one owns (Luke 12:15). Avoid waste, even Jesus did not condone waste (John 6:12).Do not place hopes on settling problems with a quick fix, because that can lead to making big financial mistakes (1 Tim 6:9-10). And always keep on sowing, especially in seasons of need (2 Cor 9:6-11). When what we have is not enough for our needs, it is meant for sowing (1 Kings 17:13-14). When we follow all these principles, we will continually grow and move on to higher ground, which is God's desire for us (Pro 4:18).

Points to Ponder:
  1. When we study Deu 15:1-11, what do we learn about i) God's attitude towards his people being in debt; ii) who the Israelites were supposed to be generous towards; and iii) why?
  2. What are the practical steps God has laid upon your heart concerning your personal habits in the areas of your spending, debt and earning money?
